Prevalence Rate of HBsAg and Anti-HBs in Hospitalized Patients of Pediatrics

Abstract
To assess the prevalence rate of HBsAg and anti-HBs in children, all hospitalized pediatric patients to the Department of Pediatrics of Kyungpook National University Hospital during the period from April 1981 to November 1982 were tested by RIA method, and following results were obtained.
Of 1,252 patients, 84(6.7%) were HBsAg positive, 117(7.3%) anti-HBsAg positive, and 2 both HBsAg and anti-HBs positive. There was no difference in the prevalence rate of HBsAg between rural and urban area (6.7% each). The prevalence rate of anti-HBs was significantly higher in rural area(12%) than urban area (8.0%) (p<0.05).
The highest prevalence rate of HBsAg was observed in 11~15 yrs of age group and the lowest in 0~1 month age group, and the rate increased with advancing age. The prevalence rate of anti-HBs was highest in 0~1 month group and lowest in 1~5 yrs. group.
The incidence of HBsAg was higher in male (7.6%) than in female (5.0%) but was not statistically significant. The incidence of anti-HBs was lower in male (9.0%) than female (10.0%) , but was not statistically significant.
